Marco Ferrari, Valtellina Superiore Sassella DOCG (2022) – Lombardia
Sassella is Valtellina's most graceful cru, and this is Nebbiolo from 80-year-old vines that knows it.
THE GRAPE
100% Chiavennasca from a single hectare in Sassella, with vines averaging over 80 years old. Up to 100% whole clusters go in when the stems are ripe, crushed by foot.
THE WINE
Fermented on the skins for two weeks or more, then aged around 18 months in old tonneaux. The style is perfumed and fine-boned: red cherry, dried flowers and a stony, savoury edge, with tannins that grip lightly rather than clamp. It's elegant now and will keep for years.
FOOD PAIRING
Braised veal, roast guinea fowl, bresaola, aged mountain cheese such as Bitto. Decant briefly.
THE WINEMAKER
Marco Ferrari grew up in Franciacorta, then spent several years in the northern Rhône with Franck Balthazar, learning from Thierry Allemand and the Gonon family, before a year at ArPePe in Valtellina. He launched his own estate in 2019 on steep, hand-built stone terraces above the Adda. No artificial fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides, everything picked by hand, spontaneous fermentations, whole bunches when the stems are ripe, and nothing fined or filtered.
