Azienda Agricola Rivale Pinot Nero IGT (2021) - Puglia
THE GRAPE
Pinot Noir
THE WINE
Tiny producers, nested and surrounded but miles of the wild Mediterranean bush, just a few kilometres away from the seaside of the picturesque Polignano, a Mare village in Puglia. Production of just over 3000 bottles and 2014 was their first vintage. A careful selection of hand-harvested grape is followed by spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks and rest for 1 year in tonneaux.
Although Puglia is a fairly hot region, with chalky and limestone soil, the bush plays an essential role in keeping a cool temperature around the tiny vineyards. As a result, it produces a fine and fresh Pinot noir, smoky and leathery nose with undertones of baked berries, grilled/burnt plums with hints of orange zest, soft and velvety on the palate, intense and fine with good freshness and maturity, sloe berries, baked cherries, cooking herbs, plum jam and all with a savoury finish with recall the vicinity to the seaside, round subtle tannins create a perfect balance. Complex, neat, straightforward and serious, yet, unmistakably Pinot Noir.
