Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Il Macchione (2017) – Toscana
Il Macchione represents a limited but prestigious production in the rich and ancient tradition of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Fragrant and refined, this big warm Tuscan red hugs you with dark cherries, anise, hints of leather and aromas of iris, rose, ripe berry and sandalwood. It's juicy with notes of Marasca cherry, liquorice and ground clove. Polished tannins offer light support. It was aged for 30 months in wood.
For half of the price of a Brunello di Montalcino, this Sangiovese-based wine is equally impressive and age-worthy, and it was famous and regal long before Brunello came into favour. Biodynamic.
Made to be paired with food. Grilled or roasted meats, specifically beef, lamb, wild boar and duck, go best with this wine, as do thick meat sauces made from the same meats and mixed with fresh vegetables and tomatoes. The fat content balances the acidity of the wines perfectly.
