Sangiovese Masterclass with Luca: The blood of Jupiter
Focusing on what could only be termed central Italy’s most proliferate grape is no mean feat. But then Luca is more than capable of handling that task. For Sangiovese derives its name from ‘Blood of Jupiter’, and if anyone knows how to speak of the wine of the Gods, then it is Luca.
The focus of this Masterclass is to show how Sangiovese is used by producers across Tuscany to create wines of depth and power yet of entirely independent characteristics. This is entirely tied to the potential of Sangiovese to express the terroir of the appellation where it is cultivated, be that for Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino or Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Luca has selected 6 wines that he feels exemplifies the versatility of Tuscan Sangiovese. These will be from producers including the revered Castello di Monsanto, the female-run Buccia Nera and the fiercely sustainable Carpineta Fontalpino, holding the flag for Chianti Classico, I Mandorli showing what a little coastal salinity can do for Sangiovese. This will be an occasion to compare the nuances between these winemakers’ approaches to winemaking as well as how they work with Sangiovese.
