Italy is not just about sun-soaked plains and rolling hills. Some of its most compelling wines come from extreme places — high Alpine valleys, the shoulders of ancient volcanoes, and rugged Apennine terrain where altitude, energy, and drama shape every vintage.

This session of The Passione Vino Wine Salon climbs into the heights of Italy to explore what happens when vines grow where conditions push them to their limits.
Five wines. Five expressions of altitude and volcanic energy. Italy at its most elemental.

WINES

Vignaiolo Fanti — Nosiola — Dolomiti IGT — Trentino (100% Nosiola — rare Alpine white grown on steep terraces above Trento, one of Trentino's only indigenous white grapes — fresh, mineral and almost impossible to find outside the region)

Dirupi — Olé! — Rosso di Valtellina DOC — Lombardy (100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) — high-altitude terraced vineyards above Sondrio, aged in stainless steel for freshness — Nebbiolo as you've never tasted it: light, taut and Alpine)

Valle Reale — Vigneto di Popoli — Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC — Abruzzo (100% Montepulciano — single vineyard at 350m in the Apennine foothills near Popoli, organically farmed — one of Abruzzo's benchmark expressions of this powerful mountain grape)

Vigna Meridio — Liàma — Terre Siciliane IGP — Sicily (Alicante, Frappato & Nero d'Avola — ancient alberello vines tied with liàma grass in the Greek tradition, dry-farmed on volcanic soils near Ragusa — named after the grass that holds the vines)

I Custodi — Nerello Cappuccio — Terre Siciliane IGT — Sicily (100% Nerello Cappuccio — volcanic soils on the slopes of Mount Etna, organically farmed — one of the rare varietal expressions of Etna's most overlooked indigenous red grape)
