“La Faya” Terrazze Retiche IGT (2015), Sandro Fay - Lombardia
GRapes : Nebbiolo, Merlot, Shiraz.
This is the only blended wine from the master of Valtellina Marco Fay. All the grapes come from a single south facing vineyard. Merlot is planted at the bottom and at the highest rockier elevation there are few terraces of Syrah, whilst in between we of course find the Nebbiolo- Chiavennasca. These grapes gave birth to this elegant blend of 60% Nebbiolo Chiavennasca, 30% Merlot, and 10% Syrah, where each component is fermented separately and blended later.
Aged for at least 12 months in tonneaux before racking and bottling, this intriguing full body wine is held in the cellar for about 18 to 24 months before release. In the glass, it has an intense ruby color with orange shades. Although still showing a very good structure and essentially cool-climate characters, it is certainly the most voluptuous of the wines in the Fay's range. On the nose, it has intense aromas of camphor, white pepper, darker spices, black olives, vanilla, and a very small touch of sweetness. The palate is very long and lush, with flavors of black fruits, especially fresh picked blackberries, strawberry, raspberry, cherry. Nice fresh acidity balances the more lush fruit, and firm but round tannins appear on the end palate.
Food Pairing : Pair it with, hearty pasta, fatty fish and lamb.
