Alberelli di Giodo Nerello Mascalese IGT, (2020) – Etna
THE GRAPE
Nerello Mascalese
THE WINE
The precious vines of Nerello Mascalese and Carricante thrive on volcanic soils between 700 and 950m above sea level. Inspired by the name of the wine, the vines are bush-trained, with ages ranging from 80 to 100 years. They yield limited quantities, a true natural heritage.
Fermentations take place in open stainless steel vats with gentle punch-downs for 20 days to achieve a delicate extraction, while ageing occurs in French oak tonneaux of 500/700 litres for 18 months. Then, it rests in concrete briefly before spending 12 months in the bottle.
There is a range of explosive aromas in the truest sense of the term, with red fruit and graphite notes. On the palate, it's straightforward and fresh, with bold structure and long minerality on the finish.
But For The Curious ...
Alberelli di Giodo" is the label that the famous winemaker Carlo Ferrini chose to dedicate to Mount Etna. After a long career of prestigious collaborations and not content with his personal project in the lands of Montalcino, Ferrini's love for Sicily urged him to explore another terroir and another extraordinary grape variety. The uniqueness of Mount Etna and its native grape, Nerello Mascalese, has been interpreted with finesse, resulting in a red wine that perfectly expresses its place of origin and the best varietal characteristics of the grapes. A magnificent testament of craftsmanship, an absolute must-try.
