La Ca' Nova Barbaresco MONTESTEFANO DOCG (2022) - Piemonte
THE GRAPES
100% Nebbiolo from the legendary Montestefano cru in Barbaresco (Piedmont), organic‑tended vines on clay‑limestone soils with southern exposure.
THE WINE
A powerful, long‑lived Barbaresco that harmonises structure and finesse. The 2021 Montestefano shows dark red and blue fruit—black cherry, damson, blackberry—woven with dried rose, lavender, licorice, tobacco, dried herbs, and a mineral, stony core. The palate builds with firm, fine‑grained tannins, bright acidity, and a deep, layered mid‑palate, leading to a long, perfumed finish. Built for ageing but seductive even now after some time in bottle.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with braised beef, wild mushroom risotto, tagliatelle al ragù, or mature cheeses like pecorino stagionato and aged cow’s milk mountain cheeses.
THE WINEMAKER
La Ca’ Növa, a small, family‑driven estate in the commune of Barbaresco, champions tradition with stainless‑steel fermentations and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. Their Montestefano is widely regarded as one of the finest expressions of this historic cru, earning a sterling 98‑point score from Vinous for its balance, intensity, and depth.
