Vike Vike Barbagia Bianco IGT Granatza, 2022 – Sardegna
THE GRAPE
Granatza.
THE WINE
Granaztza is a grape variety indigenous to the region of Barbagia, Sardinia. It is now only just gaining recognition and respect to be vinified separately rather than being used as a blending grape in red wines. Thank god for that! Granatza appears to have been cultivated in Sardinia for centuries with its name being linked to the Latin term ‘vernaculum’ or local.
At Vike Vike they have discovered that the density of Granatza vines within their historic vineyards are around 10 vines per hectare. Which naturally means that yields are very small. But small can mean mighty.
A straw green colour in the glass hints at the pervasive freshness of this wine. On the nose citrus fruits and mint dominate. This is reflected in the mouth with a strong minerality and lemon peel at first, graduating through to a long herbaceous finish. Pair this with hard Sardinian Pecorino for a perfect balance where savoury notes rule.
